Green Lantern (2011)

A review on Green Lantern in 2011.

Green Lantern is a film adaptation of DC comic book superhero Green Lantern Hal Jordan, starring as Hal Jordan Ryan Reynolds, known as well for filling the role of mercenary Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine in 2010, directed by Martin Campbell and released in 17 June 2011.

The plot focuses on Hal Jordan, a reckless test pilot working for the United States Air Force, as he was chosen to inherit the power ring of a dying Green Lantern Abin Sur (Temuera Morrison), months upon the awakening of an ancient evil wielding the yellow power of fear by the name of Parallax (whose voice belonged to one Clancy Brown). With a force so unstoppable as Parallax on the loose, as it churned through light years to wreak vengeance upon those responsible for its imprisonment in the first place, the Green Lantern Corps, it had befallen upon Hal Jordan the moment he received Abin Sur's Green Lantern ring to stop this menace before it eventuated in the end of the world as he knew it.

Hal Jordan was one who, despite his own infirmities he or anyone else would normally dismiss as simply, to put in words used by him, being human, despite being disheartened by what they were told to be, never failed to rise to the occasion, especially in times of crisis; a hero who acknowledged his own fears and managed still to overcome them with a sense of courage he never knew was he had.

Parallax on the other hand was rendered the antithesis of what the entirety of the Green Lantern Corps stood for, an entity that exist to effect the breakdown of will by insinuating fear in its place, from which it would be drawn out to feed itself. Its smoky tentacled appearance was an adequate paradigm of form fitting said function; the merest look of it probably sufficed to strike fear in all.

Other characters include Carol Ferris played by Blake Lively, long-time companion of Hal Jordan since their childhoods; Hector Hammond played by Peter Sarsgaard, an embittered rival of Hal's vying for Carol's affection, who was later infected through contact by Parallax's residue found in the deceased Abin Sur's wound; fellow Green Lanterns namely Sinestro (Mark Strong), Kilowog (Michael Clarke Duncan) and Tomar-Re (Geoffrey Rush), all three reduced to no more than Hal Jordan's 'welcoming committee' into the Green Lantern Corps, as the entirety of the intergalactic police squadron suffered a similar fate of simply being restricted to putting on a show of bravado by launching green energy beams from their rings throughout the whole affair.

Green Lantern was well worth the watch, and certainly all viewers will be expecting a sequel that may shed a light as to the fate of the yellow lantern ring forged as instructed by Sinestro. Ryan Reynolds, who did a fantastic job playing Hal Jordan, will be forced to meet an elevated set of expectations in the upcoming spin-off from X-Men Origins: Wolverine of Marvel's Merc With A Mouth, Deadpool reportedly in 2014.
