Tafero's DVD Reviews of the Day (0902) - The Empire Strikes Back - 1980

This is a dvd movie review of The Empire Strikes Back - 1980. This is the second installment of the original Star Wars Trilogy.

0902 - The Empire Strikes Back- 1980 – Directed by George Lucas and starring the usual suspects of the Star War Trilogy, Mark Hammil as Luke, Harrison Ford as Han Solo , Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia, Chewbaca, R2D2, and 3CPO. Alec Guiness as Obiwan was killed off in the first episode, but his spirit lived on in the force, so they had to pay him again for this episode. In this episode, the Evil Empire (the Star Wars version and not the New York Yankees) is building a new Death Star. The Rebel Alliance is still alive and well. The best part of the film is the confrontation between Luke and his father, Darth Vader (what a cool dad). Lukas continues his mastery of the genre with tight direction that is just as enticing as the first Star Wars film. Some critics have commented that this film is actually superior to the first one. I thought the second entry was just a tad better, as well. The weakest actor in this troupe is obviously Mark Hammil. He is pretty much a one-dimensional actor and has no other film credits worth discussing. However, he is saved by the presence of the highly competent Harrison Ford and Alec Guiness. The Darth Vader character actually steals this film from everyone else and is the centerpiece of the film.

Han Solo is not prominent in this film because Harrison Ford had previous commitments for other films. To get around that problem, the producers, had Han Solo frozen in carbonite by Jabba the Hutt for most of the film. The rebels kill Jabba and then Luke Skywalker moves on a planet where Yoda and the spirit of Obiwan Kanobi teach him how to skillfully use the lightsaber. This skill will come in handy when Luke must face his father, Darth Vader in the ultimate confrontation. We also find out that Luke and Leia are brother and sister and this eliminates any triangle possibilities among Leia, Luke and Han Solo. Luke then leads a contingent of the Rebels into the depths of the new Death Star, where he finally confronts Darth Vader, face to face. This is the highlight of the film and the point in time in which Luke finds out that Darth Vader is his father. He also learns that Princess Leia is his sister. Darth Vader wants him to come to the Dark Side and Luke must call on the spirit of Obiwan to do the right thing. Recommeded as a great sequel.
